I still hear my mother’s voice say the words when putting a supper plate in front of me, “It’s good for you!” And it was true.

What else in life beyond food could a mother share today as being good for a child?

Beyond food, Doc recommends sharing many things that are beneficial for children. Here are some thoughts:

Encouraging curiosity and a love for learning can set a child up for lifelong success. Books, educational games, and engaging in intellectual discussions are all good for a child’s development.

Encouraging regular exercise and outdoor activities helps children stay healthy and develop good habits for the future. What was routine is my childhood days is not so routine today with indoor activity at the computer more interesting for a child than running and playing outside.

Teaching children about emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and self-care is crucial. Activities like meditation, open conversations about feelings, and providing a safe space for expression are invaluable.

Supporting a child’s interests, whether it’s music, art, sports, or any other hobby, can help them develop skills, confidence, and a sense of achievement.

Encouraging positive social interactions, teamwork, and empathy helps children build strong relationships and navigate social situations effectively.

Teaching children about hygiene, proper sleep routines, and other healthy habits sets a foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

Sharing important values like honesty, kindness, respect, and responsibility helps children grow into conscientious and morally grounded individuals.

Teaching children about your family’s culture is very important, and also exposing them to different cultures, traditions, and perspectives to help broaden their understanding and appreciation of the world. The world is getting smaller everyday.

In practical, non-radical messaging, teaching children about sustainability, conservation, and the importance of protecting the environment which is crucial for everyone’s future.

Guiding children in the responsible use of technology and the internet, including understanding online safety and digital etiquette.

These elements contribute to a well-rounded upbringing, equipping children with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in various aspects of life.

To my daughter I would say, “Teach ’em good at home and I’ll reinforce your beliefs when someday (I hope) I get them for the summer!
